The women of the Kalyra Women's Racing Team are Master Athletes that bring passion, love of cycling, and serious competition to the Race Across America (RAAM). We strive to be ambassadors of women in sports and examples of empowerment. Our goal is to break the standing RAAM record for a 4-woman team of 6 days 18 hours and 34 minutes. What is Race Across America (RAAM)?
The clock starts in Oceanside, CA on Saturday June 12, 2010 and doesn’t stop until the team reaches the finish line in Annapolis, MD over 3,000 miles and 110,000 vertical feet of climbing away. Known as the toughest endurance race in the world, the Race Across America holds legendary stature and is one of the most respected and longest running annual endurance events the world over.
Established in 1982, RAAM is an event so staggering that merely to finish is, for most, the accomplishment of a lifetime. RAAM inspires everyone that it touches. A monumental race contested with the utmost of sportsmanship and zeal. RAAM is larger than life – a breeding ground for champions, a testing ground for elite riders and a shining example of the strength of human spirit.
This ain’t no Tour baby!
This is a Race. Unlike other famous races, like the Tour de France, RAAM is not a stage race. The race is one stage, live to the very end. In RAAM, once the ‘gun’ fires on the west coast, the time doesn’t stop until each racer reaches the finish line on the east coast. RAAM is 30% longer than the Tour de France and racers finish in half the time with no rest days. Unlike the Tour de France, there is no drafting or taking shelter from the wind. When a rider is on the road, it is a solo effort. It is the ultimate challenge in endurance racing.
Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara
Race Across America with Team Kalyra will be racing to earn funds for Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara (Girls Inc.), a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.
Through educational programs and advocacy, Girls Inc. offers girls ages 4 ½ to 18 years the opportunity to participate in research-based programs in which they experience success as they acquire skills, gain confidence, become self-reliant, and practice leadership.
Girls Inc. promotes consistent themes: every girl has the right to be herself and valued for who she is; to resist gender stereotypes; to express herself with originality and enthusiasm; to accept and appreciate her body; to prepare for interesting work and economic independence; and to have confidence in herself.
Girls Inc. inspires girls to realize that they are beautiful, they are unique, and that they are strong, smart, and bold.
