Annual Campaign
As a Girls Inc. supporter, you may know that our mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. This is accomplished by providing girls with structured, intentional, and educational programming at our two licensed childcare centers and multiple outreach locations. You may also know that we are continually challenged to provide scholarships for girls from low-incoem families.
What you may not know is that the need for scholarships has significantly increased this year. More parents than usual have lost jobs, homes, or subsidized child-care funding. As families face such profound life changes, they are more vulnerable to other problems such as substance abuse or violence. Their daughters more than ever need the safe, consistent and supportive environment that Girls Inc. offers.
Here are a few examples of deserving scholarship applicants:
Barbara (age 8) lives with her mother and younger brother. Her father died unexpectedly just after the family moved to the area. Having no extended family or friends nearby, Barbara and her family turned to Girls Inc. where Barbara now thrives in a safe and nurturing environment. She has made many friends and attends weekly counseling sessions.
Kristin (age 6) lives with her mother, younger brother and sister. Her mother works full time and her father is incarcerated. In dealing with her father’s absence, Kristin began to act out violently. Through participation in Girls Inc. programs, including gymnastics, Kristin now has the tools and resources to cope with her situation in more healthy ways.
Susan (age 7) lives with her mother, grandmother, and teenage aunt. Susan’s mother has been diagnosed with severe mental health issues and is not able to work or care for Susan. Susan’s grandmother, who can only work part time, is the sole source of family income. Susan was referred to Girls Inc. by her school teacher. Since attending, Susan has shown signs of leadership and independence, and has developed a confident, positive attitude.
Today, more than ever, girls need YOU — someone dedicated to giving every girl the opportunity to thrive. Your generosity will ensure we can say “YES!” to all scholarship applicants as they register for the Girls Inc. after school program. Our thanks in advance for your continued support.
Warm regards,
Barbara Levi, Ph.D. Monica Spear
